Matric Portfolio Requirements

At a meeting held at National Department of Education Pretoria 31 January 2006 to discuss Matric Portfolio Requirements, it was agreed that:
  • The CASS component will consist of FOUR tasks
  • The four tasks will be marked by the teacher concerned.
  • Each task will be marked out of 25 giving a total of 100
  • This mark out of a 100 will be the CASS mark (classwork mark) for the learner
  • The portfolio of each learner will be handed to the school Principal by the teacher between the 10-20 September of each year.

Recommended that two tasks be done in first term and then one in second term and one in third term. School principal needs marks for each term!

The FOUR tasks are the following:

1. Theory/Harmony section: Learners will do a section from a theory or harmony workbook or examination paper worth 25 marks.

Assessment criteria: The learner is able to do a theory or harmony question at the level of grade expected by the teacher. (ensure that the work is marked out of 25 )

2. Practical section: Learners will perform scales or a technical study worth 25 marks.
Assessment criteria: The learner is able to perform scales or a technical study at the required level of grade expected by the teacher. (ensure that the work is marked out of 25) Note that the criteria should focus on technical skill as well as correct execution of notes at a given tempo.

3. Practical performance: Teachers will make a recording of one or more of the Learners pieces that are being prepared for the practical exam.
Assessment criteria: The learner is able to have a performance recorded.( ensure that it is a one time only recording.( Do not make several recordings as the learner will not learn to do it right the first time. The mark out of 25 given will be for the performance of one or two pieces. The criteria can be broken into sections like, clarity of technique, phrasing, sense of rhythm, correct notes, interpretation of the music etc.)

4. Written assignment: The learner will do a written assignment on any aspect relating to the final practical performance eg. Poster, press kit, composers, instruments, genre of music etc.
Assessment criteria: The learner is able to do a written assignment on his or her own. ( Give marks for the effort put in to the assignment, for relevant information, for creative use of material, for neatness of presentation and any other important criteria. Note that this is solo work and not group work marked out of 25).

It is important to note that a DIFFERENT assignment is compulsory each year.

What is required from the Music teacher and the learner wishing to do an external examination for school purposes?

1. Practical examination
2. Theory examination
3. Portfolio work as noted above

These marks are to be submitted to the Principal of the school by the teacher.

In Grade 12 the additional task is to register the learner with the Assessment authority that will give the learner an examination number.

The teacher will ensure that the school Principal knows that the learner is registered. The Principal of the school will ensure that marks are handed in timeously by the teacher.

The following does complicate our mark allocation but in short a fail for UNISA, Royal Schools or Trinity College is also a fail mark for the Education Department.

NOTE: PASS MARK FOR TRINITY COLLEGE AS WELL AS ROYAL SCHOOLS IS 60%

NOTE: PASS MARK FOR UNISA IS 50%

It is important to note that if a learner does not meet the pass requirements of the external examination body then they will also have a fail mark from the National Department of Education. Example 47% for UNISA means fail and the mark will be converted to a fail.

HOW THE MARKS ARE DISTRIBUTED: ( see the form that has to be filled in )

There are four tasks to be completed before 20 September of each year.
It is recommended that two tasks are done in Term 1 , one in Term 2 and another task to be done in Term 3. Do not leave these tasks for the last month because the school Principal needs marks for every term.

CASS mark is two written papers and two practical tests.
This means in first term there will be a written task and a practical task.
Marks out of 50 but given as a percentage to the school Principal.
In the second term a written test or practical test and in the third term a written test or practical test depending on what was chosen in term two.
Marks out of 25 but given as a percentage to the school Principal.
These four tasks amount to the CASS mark out of 100.

The external theory exam and the external practical exam is normally marked out of 100 or given as a percentage. The school Principal will reflect the marks as follows:
Theory out of 150, the practical out of 150. This gives the external mark a total out of 300. This will be for Grade 10, 11 and 12.
The school principal will give the marks to the provincial person in charge of all examination marks/results.

Here is an example:
Task 1 = 20/25
Task 2 = 15/25
Task 3 = 18/25
Task 4 = 18/25
CASS mark is then calculated as 71/100
Theory exam 70% = 105/150
Practical exam 90% = 135/150
External mark is then = 240/300
All subjects will be reflected out of 400. Thus the example = 240 + 71 = 311/400 for the Music example.

FORM TO BE FILLED IN AND SIGNED BY TEACHER, MODERATOR AND SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
