YouthArt

We are proud to announce South Africa’s youngest, most promising and most exciting Music Development Programme.

YouthArt is a non-profit organization. Its vision is the development of Visual and Performing Arts amongst young South Africans of all socio-economic backgrounds. Through its OASIS project (Orchestra At School In South Africa), YouthArt aims to help develop instrumental music in both primary and high schools by creating viable feeder programmes for high schools. This programme was inspired by its French counterpart in Paris, Orchestre à l’ École. The initiative came from Musiquelaine in Paris, which is now in association with YouthArt.

OASIS (Orchestra At School In South Africa)

The mission of OASIS is the development of instrumental music amongst the youth in South Africa by creating sustainable and cost-effective projects.

This mission will be realized through our vision: To create instrumental music programmes at schools in such a way that each programme will become self-sustainable after two years. These projects are known as OASIS Orchestra At School In South Africa.

YouthArt’s motivation is to compensate for the break in continuity of instrumental music tuition between primary and high schools. YouthArt also wants to use music (and other arts) as means for social upliftment in disadvantaged communities.

The children that YouthArt wants to educate through their OASIS project comes from communities where clear vision and the recognition of successful ways to achieve social upliftment are obscured by their immediate unfavourable socio-economic environment. We believe that these children should be educated in centres where ideal models of the road to social upliftment and cultural integration have been created through music. Here they will identify their goal and take this back to their communities, armed with a vision to share.

YouthArt FINE ARTS SUMMER SCHOOL (27 March – 1 April 2010)

The YouthArt Fine Arts Summer School (FASS) is the first of its kind in South Africa to incorporate the disciplines of Music, Classical Ballet, Drama and Visual Arts. The campus for FASS will be at Tygerberg High School. The FASS aims to create a united platform for young musicians/artists who wish to receive expert group instruction in one of the above disciplines. The 2010 event is also unique in offering teacher training in String Education and a Conducting Course. All these workshops and instruction will be given by renowned faculty members from South Africa, France, UK and USA.

The Summer Camp is not merely aimed at fostering talent into excellence, but creates a platform for all young musicians/artists to communicate through their art forms and grow in confidence as young contributors to a holistically balanced society. The philosophy of the Japanese music pedagogue, Shinichi Suzuki that “All children can learn things well, given the right environment”, is the motto.

The preservation and conservation of our environment is a secondary issue that YouthArt will address at the Summer School. This will not only form one of the themes for the Visual Art component, but each participant will be exposed to the issue and contribute in a number of innovative and fun ways.

The different art forms that participants will be exposed to at the Summer School will be:
