Endler Concert Series presents the Mozart Requiem
The annual collaboration between the Canticum Novum Choir, resident at the Moederkerk Stellenbosch, and the Stellenbosch University Symphony Orchestra will take the form of two performances of the Mozart Requiem. These will be on 12 and 13 March at 20:00 in the Endler Hall. The choir’s resident conductor, Louis van der Watt, will direct this performance with soloists Vanessa Tait-Jones (soprano), Minette du Toit-Pearce (alto), Willem Bester (tenor) and Barend van der Westhuizen (bass). These soloists have become synonymous with performances of this nature and patrons will recall their superb rendition of Handel’s Messiah last year.
Mozart’s Requiem, although less than an hour long, is regarded as one of the most profound beacons of the entire classical music repertoire. Its sublime beauty, tangible pathos and deeply moving undertones characterize its otherwise classical harmonic language. Mozart, a very sick man towards the end of his life, is often seen to have been composing the Requiem for himself and the mysterious circumstances under which he was writing the Requiem seem to indicate that he may have been commissioned to write it by his arch rival Antonio Salieri. Did Salieri really want Mozart dead so that he could claim the Requiem as his own composition…? Mozart died before he could finish the work and the world has come to know it as his, and possibly his greatest. It was completed by his pupil Franz Xaver Süssmayr.
Tickets are available at Computicket outlets countrywide or on 083 915 8000. Regular tickets cost R95 and student/pensioner tickets cost R75 excluding a Computicket service charge. Box office at the Endler Hall will open at 19:00 on the night. For further enquiries, please call the Endler Hall Concert Series on 021 808 2343 during office hours.
Kaartjies is landwyd by alle Computicket-verkooppunte beskikbaar of by 083 915 8000. Vir verdere navrae kontak gerus die Endlersaal-konsertreeks by 021 808 2343 gedurende kantoorure. .

Udai Mazumdar is a former student and accompanist to the legendary sitar player Ravi Shankar and is an accompanist to many of India's top soloists, playing regular concerts in India, Europe, and the US. Derek Gripper's unique Cape-tinged guitar language has taken him to over eleven countries and earned him a following of South Africans interested in hearing "a new insight into South Africa and its music." Derek and Udai first met while performing together in Switzerland last year, and decided to collaborate once again so as to further explore the "meeting point between Indian classical, Western classical, and the sounds and landscapes of the Western Cape."
Thursday the 25th of March will see the duo at The Alliance Francaise, on Friday the 26th at the SABC Beach Road Auditorium where they will be supported by local pianist Kyle Shepherd, and their final show in Cape Town will be at the beautifully intimate Kalk Bay venue The Forge on Saturday the 27th of March.
