3 February, Friday 8 pm: Liesl Stoltz (flute) plays Mozart Flute Concerto in G with Barry Smith conducting the Orchestra of the Academy of St Andrew. Programme includes Haydn Alleluia and Farewell symphonies. St Andrews concert series, Cape Town. Further details: Barry Smith alsmith@iafrica.com

25 February: 20:00: Dorel Baicu (flute, Dorin Gliga (oboe) and Pavel Ionescu (bassoon) of the “Syrinx” Trio, Romania. Mozart, Haydn, Telemann and vontemporary Romanian composers will be featured on their programme. Endler Concert Series. Further details: Louise Howlett howlett@sun.ac.za

16 March, Fri evening: Marietjie Pauw (flute) , Annamarie Bam (clarinet) and Benjamin van Eeden (piano) of the Taffanel Trio will present a recital on the St Andrews concert series. Programme includes Debussy, Schmitt, Villa-Lobos, Hendrik Hofmeyr, Libbby Larson and Shostakovich. Further details: Barry Smith alsmith@iafrica.com

19 May: 20:00: KEMUS (Komitee vir Eietydse Musiek): Name of flutist to play in trio to be confirmed. Programme focus is on the composer Peter Klatzow, and will include “Sunlight Surrounds Her” for flute, violin, cello, bassoon and marimba. Endler Concert Series. 14 June, 10:45 am (morning): Marietjie Pauw (flute) and Princeton flutist Barbara Highton Williams present a newly commissioned duo by Neo Muyanga, together with duos by York Bowen, Feld, Koechlin, Bozza and Elizabeth Brown. New compositions for flute by South African composers

The concert and events diary would like to announce a few new compositions which have recently been published. See below, celebrate, and order to play! Kindly let FLUFSA know should you be aware of other recent compositions.

Flute and piano

Hendrik Hofmeyr : Mabalel: Fantasia op ‘n gedig van Eugène Marais (2010) vir fluit en klavier. Gekomponeer in opdrag van Owen Britz, en beskikbaar na eerste uitvoering. 7 min.

Alexander Johnson : Imicabango for flute and piano. Duration c 13 minutes, in three movements. SAMRO commission for Cobus du Toit. Imicabango is translated as Impressions (Zulu) and the three movement titles are Impumalanga (Dawn), Isiduduzo (Lullaby) and Isikhwishikazana (Small Whirlwind). The first movement is prescribed for the new UNISA flute syllabus, grade 8, and the work in its entirety is prescribed for the new UNISA flute syllabus (Teaching Licentiate). Neo Muyanga : catha mtwana for flute and piano (2010) (SAMRO Young Players Series). This piece is in popular style, with lyrical melody and chordal accompaniment, and includes syncopation. Intended for both flutist and pianist to be on a grade four to five level. Order from SAMRO.

Flute and clarinet

Loeb van Zuilenburg, Paul : Diversions for flute and clarinet (c. 6 mins) – Theme and variations, which became Tune and Diversions, as renamed unofficially by the composer. Composed 2009 and dedicated to (and premiered by) Marietjie Pauw and Annamarie Bam (of the “Taffanel Trio” in 2009). Order from the composer or from SAMRO.

Hendrik Hofmeyr : Lied van die Somerwind (Song of the Summer Wind) vir fluit en viool. 2009 Première: Owen Britz, Darling Classic Experience 2009. 9 min.

Hendrik Hofmeyr : It takes two (2009) for flute, cello and piano (SAMRO commission. Written for Trio Hemanay and recorded on their second CD, released 2010). This work is the composer’s somewhat ironic comment on the tango…
Flute, clarinet and piano

Neo Muyanga : tricolor ankh (a turbulent short-story concerning the love affair between cleopatra and antony) : Trio in four movements, (entitled the morning, the afternoon, the night, epilogue) for flute, cello and piano. SAMRO commission for Trio Hemanay, 2008. Can be ordered from SAMRO.

Hendrik Hofmeyr : Trio for flute, clarinet and piano (Completed December 2010, to be premièred in April 2011 by Taffanel Trio.)
