Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need a theory qualification before I can take higher level practical exams?
No, there is absolutely no theory requirement for any Trinity Guildhall practical Grade examinations. However, we would strongly encourage the study of musical theory to complement practical studies.
- Do I have to pass each grade before progressing to the next?
No, it is possible to take any Grade examination when you and your teacher feel that you are fully prepared for that level. It is also possible to ‘skip’ grades. There are some prerequisites at Diploma level only.
- Can I still offer performance from memory as an option?
No, performance from memory no longer attracts an independent mark in any Trinity Guildhall examination at any level. However, students are still encouraged to play from memory if this improves their performance, and examiners may comment upon it in their report.
- Must I use the edition stipulated in the syllabus for my pieces?
Generally speaking, the editions listed in the syllabus are recommended only. However, in cases of doubt as to the authenticity of an edition, please use the edition given in the syllabus.
- What should I do if I have special needs?
In order for us to help you with your requests, please fill in a ‘Special Needs Request form’ which you can either download from the Trinity Guildhall website, or obtain from your Local Representative or directly from Head Office. The more information you can give us about your specific requirements, the easier it is for us to tailor the exam to your needs. Please ensure that any requests for special needs provision, with evidence provided, are received at least six weeks prior to the examination.
- When will I receive my report form?
Unless your report needs to be referred to Head Office, you should receive your report form directly from the Representative at the end of the examination session. For London centres and centres that do not have a Representative, the report forms will need to return to Head Office and therefore may take a few days longer to issue.
- When will I receive my certificate?
We aim to provide certificates within 6 – 8 weeks of the examination. Braille certificate overlays may take a little longer.
- Can I buy my music directly from Trinity Guildhall’s Head Office?
No, music should be obtained through your local music shop. In case of difficulty in obtaining music, please refer to contact details of publishers and suggested specialist music shops listed in the back of each syllabus.
- What happens if I cannot get hold of a piece of music – can I use a photocopy?
It is illegal to photocopy music. Under normal circumstances, photocopies must not be used in an examination and candidates doing so will be penalised. Very occasionally publishers authorise photocopies of music that is no longer in print, but you must always check this directly with the publisher.
