Dear Cape Town Male Voice Choir Supporter

You may or may not be aware that the Cape Town Male Voice Choir has been invited, and accepted, to participate in a 1 000 male voice choral concert at the Alexandra Palace in London during July 2012. Organised by the London Welsh Choir, the concert will form part of the Cultural Olympics which takes place during the two weeks prior to the Olympic Games. We will be joined by four other choirs in South Africa, one from Cape Town (the Jonge Studente Koor – a Malay choir) and three from Gauteng (the Welsh Choir of SA, the Cenestra Choir and the Dorian Choir). The SA choral contingent can certainly be regarded as a good reflection of the ‘rainbow nation’. An exciting part of this project is that every continent has a 10 minute slot to present music which reflects the musical culture of their continent. This is a challenge, but the musical directors of each of the choirs are working on a piece which is intended to blow people away!

Thirty five members of the CTMVC are intending to travel to London and the costs for this undertaking are in the range of R1m. A combination of member contributions, fundraising and sponsorships will, with luck and hard work, ensure that we achieve our dream of getting to participate in this wonderful event. If you have any ideas for fundraising events or contacts you think may be useful or would like to contribute in some way please contact us.

One of the projects we have identified as part of our fundraising efforts, but also for long-term revenue generation for the choir, is the recording of a CD. To achieve this we require both the funding and a balanced choir. The former we are pursuing via a combination of sponsorships and loans and the latter, specifically, we are looking to see whether you can assist us. At the moment we are lacking basses. Having a good solid bass section is fundamental to achieving a good choral sound so we are urgently looking to find new basses to join the choir. Part of the urgency is that we intend to record the CD in October this year so there is not much time for new members to get up to speed with the music.

We would really appreciate your assistance in spreading the word about our bass singer requirement or dropping us a line to provide contact details of people you may know who may be interested. Please contact Noël on email, nunky@telkomsa.net or phone 082 471 7275 or 021 706 2129.

Kind regards

PETER BARRY

The Mamela Music Project is a musical NGO assisting with musical development of learners in Manenberg for the past 17years. Up till now Mamela has been successful in developing the musical talents of both primary and high school learners, as well as the broader community, which would otherwise have gone wasted.

Initially we received funding from overseas but this has been discontinued due to their funding policy to fund up to a maximum of three years. Local funding has also diminished.

We are now seeking assistance from music teachers and fundraisers to help us continue our work in Manenberg and surrounding areas. The following teachers are needed: piano, keyboards, guitar, recorder, choir, percussion, brass and theory of music.

Please accept our thanks for reading this mail, we trust you will include our need in your newsletter.

Should you require more information please contact Charles Louw.

I still have the old CD but would really like to learn these songs but I am not quite good enough to figure them by ear.
