City Soirée Newsletter – October 2011

As some of you may know, certain of you definitely know, and a handful probably don't know, we have just turned 1 year old! Happy ho!

We had some truly stupendous hoo-ha's and big-deals planned as a reward for your utter devotion to our sense of self-importance. Alas, we had to cancel the shindigs due to some rather unforeseen eventualities. The upside is that we met some über interesting artists and we promise to unleash all of them in the not-too-distant future.

The first year of City Soirée has been nothing short of amazing and we have each and every one of you to thank for our success. So pat yourself on the back or ask someone else to pat you. Now put your pants back on. We thought it good and well to use a few snapshots to reminisce about the last year because we all know that a picture says a thousand words and to write 14 000 words is just stupid. For heaven's sake, it's only a newsletter...

Dear Friends

Our final newsletter for 2010 comes just in time to wish you all a joyous Christmas and everything you wish for yourselves in 2011.

A very short update on the success of our Gala Concert at the City Hall on 29th October. This was truly a magnificent event and we were blessed to have the Tygerberg Children’s Choir giving of their glorious voices to help us raise just short of R37,000. Ian and I will NEVER tire of listening to their singing – they are true angels. Thank you, thank you to everyone who contributed in any way to a remarkable event

Just 3 weeks later the duo of Len Ward and Lainey Boonzaier gave us a treat at the Boutique Theatre, Velvet upon Tweed very close to the Kelvin Grove Club. Another lovely occasion and this little Theatre was booked out some time before the event which netted us R6,485. Lainey is a popular Jazz singer and Len’s virtuosity on the keyboard has to be heard to be believed.

As at the close of 2010 we have invested R95,000 for Andrew and are pleased with our results, however we have a long way to go before we have saved sufficient for the Re-Walk Suit which we hope will be available in SA at the end of next year.

For your enjoyment just a month away we have “Opening Doors for Andrew” and “hark ye” all those living in Muizenberg and surrounds this Concert will be staged at the Masque Theatre! A real treat for you, little to no travelling.

Our guest artist is surely known to us all the stunning mezzo-soprano Violina Anguelov accompanied on the piano by equally gifted and well loved Victor Tichardt. Her choice of items on the programme is a surprise but we can guarantee you they will be popular and well loved.

Crooner Harry Curtis will treat us to Perry Como and Dean Martin. What a perfect impersonation he renders of these two incredibly special singers of yore.

Gladys Bullock’s ballroom dancers are back at the Masque. 2 able bodied dancers will perform for us as well as partnering 2 wheelchair dancers. Their dancing is stunning and they are all recent competition winners.

The duo mentioned above Len and Lainey have wonderful surprises up their sleeves but to mention just a couple to whet your appetite, firstly, made famous by Peter Seller’s –“Goodness Gracious Me” and another evergreen “That’s Amore”

This is a feel good show Friends, please DON”T MISS it and at the same time you will be helping Andrew to get a little closer to his goal – the Re-Walk Suit.

Kronendal Music Academy

When the KMA Jazz Band regrouped at the start of 2010, the pupils were already chomping at the bit to “play out”. The first few weeks were all about getting to know new members and settling into a tight group dynamic. As we gradually started taking on “once-off” performances the band got a feel for what it was like to play as one voice, supporting one another and creating a unified, well rehearsed sound.

We approached DUNES restaurant in Hout Bay to “try us out” on a Saturday afternoon and, after a false start thanks to the ever unpredictable Cape Town weather, we finally had out first professional restaurant gig on the 4th of September! Well attended, the afternoon was an even mix of fun and learning how to deal with the usual gig-gremlins. But, most importantly, the band was invited to return—on a regular basis!

The trusty ol’ MadHatter’s Hat was passed around amongst patrons and the gig yielded enough to pay for the sound engineer (with some generous help from the Dunes owner, Quentin) and add a few rands to the pupils’ pockets.

Many thanks to the parents for their support and help, to DUNES for such valuable enthusiasm for what we are trying to achieve at KMA, and to Tristan Nebe for providing top quality sound for us at an incredible 40% discount!

KMA Pupils in Brazil?

In 2009 KMA was honoured to host a workshop by Brazilian musicians, “Quarteto Raiz”, which was a great success and led to an ongoing relationship with the Brazilian Consulate in Cape Town. In 2011 we will be running a Batucada course (Brazilian percussion) with Afro-Acoustico, which would be open to all of our pupils and the Hout Bay community. This will include quarterly workshops with visiting Brazilian musicians and, also in the pipeline, is full sponsorship from Escola De Musica De Brazilia for 4 of our advanced pupils to attend an international 2 week summer course with that Academy. KMA hopes to build on this relationship to encourage exchange programmes between the two schools in 2012 and 2013 with the greater vision of involving our pupils in 2014 World Cup celebrations in Brazil in 2014…. KMA Youth Choir Re-Ignites and Celebrates Our Heritage

This term, KMA was blessed and delighted to receive a score of instruments ranging from trombones to flutes to guitars to clarinets, including a drum kit, from donors in Germany and the UK— facilitated by our dear friend, Prof Denis Goldberg. With so many beautiful instruments, we will continue to work hard to see one of Prof Goldberg’s dreams come true: that every child in Imizamu Yethu and Hangberg have an opportunity to play a musical instrument… Many thanks to Ilse Speck and Hans Well for their generous help and assistance in Germany.

Every year Imizamu Yethu holds a Heritage Day Concert in the Iziko Lobomi Christian Centre and this year our choir took part in this traditional African Culture Celebration. Our committee members were blown away by the sheer power and force the choir’s voices displayed. Choir leaders, Bonga and Zikhona took the choir onto the stage in a colourful and exuberant show of vocal prowess. KMA has been invited to include more of their ensembles next year and we hope to combine a Heritage Day Concert with the organizers, James House, of Hout Bay.

Thank you to the choir members for their enthusiasm and beautiful dress, and to Nomazmu for including us in the programme.

Our Advanced Pupils Show their Talents

KMA and what their dreams were for their musical future. The newly formed Chamber Orchestra performed under the leadership of Bergitta Lampbrecht and our Jazz Band finished off the evening with some rockin’ tunes! A hearty well done to Jade, Lucia, Aiden, Ondela, Denecia, Ella, Thomas, Toby, Kiara, Aimee and Leanne.

We were also very lucky to have in attendance the Assistant Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Lindsay Jeptha who has been a long-standing supporter of KMA. Thank you to Woolworths for their contribution to the snacks, and to the parents for their help. Thanks also to James and the Cultural Community Centre for the venue. Many thanks to Picardi-Rebel for their donation of much welcomed sherry on a chilly evening.

G-sential Theory of Music

Dear music educator

Thank you for your music theory orders during 2010! The series grew tremendously in popularity this year. Part of this is due to you, telling friends and colleagues about the books – this is much appreciated and also encouraging!

Series gets a name – The theory books got a name this year: G-sential Theory of Music. The “G” represents the G clef (indirectly referring to music theory) which is essential to reading and writing music, hence the coining “G-sential”.

Website – Recently G-sential became part of the www! The address is www.theoryofmusic.co.za. I am aware of the fact that some computers do not display all the pages. The problem is being attended to but you should be able to open it in Google Chrome.

Facebook – G-sential is also on Facebook. Please feel free to start discussions, write a review or give feedback.

UNISA 2011 syllabus – The series is currently being updated to meet the requirements of the new syllabus. The updates will be finished not later than the end of December 2010. If you plan on entering candidates for UNISA examinations, please order from January 2010.

The Department of Education’s new Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) 2011 will come to effective as of 2012 as announced by Mrs. Angie Motshekga, Minister of Basic Education.

Christmas specials (which will run to the end of April 2011!) G-sential has managed to bring down the prices of the books without compromising the quality – be on the lookout for an exiting new look! The following prices are of immediate effect:

Description Price

Grade 1 R 105.00
Grade 2 R 100.00
Grade 3 R 120.00
Grade 4 R 165.00

Grade 6 R 180.00
Grade 10 NCS R 145.00

I trust that you will have a wonderful holiday filled with peace and happiness, captured in beautiful memories. May 2011 be a realisation of great dreams!

Best wishes
Tronél Hellberg

Athlone Academy of Music

Dear Friends,

Spring has finally arrived but it still feels like winter! However, I trust that you are all rid of your winter colds and blues.

The Academy is still abuzz with activities. We have had a very successful June Winter workshop sponsored by the Rupert foundation. At the workshop we were graced by the presence of Melanie Scholtz (Jazz Artist) and Zelda Benjamin an ex-caberet artsist and still very active in the music industry. Professors Pamela and Shaun Kierman also sacrificed their valuable time to be with the students. The highlight of the workshop was the Idols Competition. Both winners received a free vocal training course at the Academy. The workshop ended on a high note when Lauren Hendricks put together a beautiful music concert involving all the students who participated.

The annual Jazz Concert of 4 September 2010 was a great success. The artists who performed, free of charge, have really entertained a most appreciative jazz audience. We look forward to next years concert and promise that it would be just as entertaining.

Our Strings Orchestra was invited to play at the 75th Anniversary gala Dinner of the St Josephs Home at the Mount Nelson Hotel. The Orchestra was most entertaining and very impressive.

The Academy is also extremely proud of the fact that 54 students have entered for the Unisa and Trinity practical exams and were successful. Practical exams were conducted in the following instruments:

1. Piano
2. Violin
3. Trumpet
4. Flute
5. Clarinet
6. French Horn

A further group of 20 have sat for the theory exams and the results should be out in the next 2 to 3 weeks.

I am also delighted that many more community members are joining the Academy. I wish them a happy and enriching stay with the Academy.

I would also like to see more students join our Academy Orchestra and Jazz band. We are also in the process of forming a Brass Ensemble.

The following events are in the pipeline:

1. Piano Recital: Sunday 24 October 2010
2. Thank the Sponsors function: 18 November 2010
3. Gala Concert: 27 November 2010.

Have a great Musical Festive Season!

Thurston Brown

Director
