RUSTENBURG HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
Applications are invited from learners in Grade 7 who wish to apply for the RGHS Music Scholarship and meet the following requirements:
- A minimum of Grade 3 on an instrument
- All candidates will be required to write a test in Theory one hour before the time of the audition
- Must provide evidence of involvement in the musical activities at their current school
- Furnish details of achievements, e.g. external examination results, eisteddfod/competition results, awards received, etc., and must submit certified copies of these together with the application form
- Supply a confidential report and recommendation from their current music teacher(s), and a copy of their most recent academic report
- Must be willing to attend an audition (please bring own accompanist if you play a melodic instrument or sing), which will consist of a minimum of five scales and five arpeggios, three contrasting pieces (if two instruments, two pieces on first instrument and one on the 2nd instrument), a sight reading test at the Grade 3 level (first instrument only) and a test in aural (at Grade 3 level) which will include a sight singing test
- Will be required to be interviewed briefly at the audition
Applications should be made on the prescribed application form, which is available from the Secretary at RGHS, by Monday 13 February 2012. These should be marked for the attention of the Head of the Music Department, Rustenburg High School for Girls, Campground Road, Rondebosch 7700. Applicants are eligible whether they learn music privately or at school, but need to be South African citizens or have permanent residence in South Africa.
The successful candidate will be required:
- To study the practical instrument(s) with the instrumental/vocal staff at RGHS, if the instrument(s)/voice are offered at the school
- To take Music as a Subject from Grade 8 to Grade 12
- To play/sing in the ensembles at RGHS appropriate to her instrument(s)
- If the candidate is a member of any non-RGHS music ensemble, the RGHS rehearsals and performances will take precedence, should any clashes arise
- To maintain a high standard of achievement in Music at school and in any external Music examination
Applicants should be available for an audition on Friday 24 February 2012 from 14:00 and will be advised of specific times for the auditions and the theory tests. Requirements for the audition are outlined in the application form.
The scholarship may be awarded in one of the following categories:
- A full scholarship
- A full scholarship shared (i.e. 50% to each candidate)
- A partial scholarship (e.g. 70%, 40%, 25%)
Please note that the Music Scholarship, full or partial, covers the school fees (according to the percentage offered) and tuition on the first instrument only. Tuition on a second instrument will be billed at the rate determined by the school each year.

The following information about our Music Scholarship may be of interest to you :
Scholarships are awarded on musical ability. A minimum standard of Grade 3 (practical) is required. General all round ability, including academic, sporting and leadership ability, as well as cultural or community involvement are considered.
Awards are made for the full five years of a boy's high school career, subject to the candidate taking music as a subject to matric level, his continued diligence and general participation in school life. He must also participate fully in the cultural activities of RBHS.
An administrative fee of R50 is levied on each pupil entering for the Music Scholarship. Cheques should be made out to Rondebosch Boys' High School. The fee of R50 may also be deposited directly into the Rondebosch Boys’ High School bank account at Standard Bank (Rondebosch branch – code 02 50 09). The account number is 071483098. Please ensure that the words ‘Scholarship’ and your son’s name and surname are written clearly on the deposit slip, a copy of which must be attached to your application.
Auditions will be held during the second term and will include all Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Percussion and Piano.
a) All candidates must provide their own accompanists if required. b) Candidates should prepare TWO pieces on their primary instrument. c) Those offering an additional instrument should prepare ONE piece on that instrument. d) Technical work: 5 scales and 5 arpeggios must be prepared.

Please note that auditioning does not commit you to accepting a place at RBHS, nor does it guarantee acceptance.

Young organists compete for scholarship
On Saturday 16 October, young organists once again competed for the Barrow-Dowling Organ Scholarship. Every two years this prestigious scholarship by the Cape Organ Guild is awarded to a successful applicant studying organ in the Western Cape. To be considered for the award, candidates may not be older than 25, and need to present a short recital in public.
The recipient of the 2010 Dowling-Barrow Organ Scholarship is the 24-year old Denzel Jacobs from Mitchell’s Plain. The Cape Organ Guild is the oldest continuous musical society in South Africa and the scholarship itself was awarded for the first time in 1923. Denzel Jacobs is a student of Niel Pauw.
