Trinity Guildhall exams in South Africa

Trinity Guildhall, part of Trinity College London, the international examinations board, conduct practical exams throughout South Africa.

Two theory exams are held on a Saturday morning in May and November.

For details on representatives throughout South Africa, follow this link.

This international examinations board has been examining in South Africa for more than 100 years, first in music and later in drama and speech. Since last year, Trinity has also been examining Rockschool examinations in contemporary music. There are 12 centres in South Africa and each centre has several venues where examinations may be conducted, either at schools or at private studios.

Five years ago the National Education Department approved Trinity music for Matric. Trinity was the first external examinations board to be awarded this honour.

One of the most important developments in recent years has been the collaboration between Trinity and various outreach programmes that cater for under-privileged youngsters and adults. There has also been increased co-operation between Trinity and the various sectors of the Education Department, also on provincial level, to use Trinity qualifications for students as well as teachers in both music and drama & speech.

As Trinity has SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) registration, it means that teachers, with a minimum of an ATCL (Associate Trinity College London) may now register with SACE (The South African Council of Educators) if they are planning to take a position at a school.

Rockschool exams were introduced in 2005.
